Nootka Rose, or Wild Rose, is a deciduous shrub that typically grows 6-9 feet tall and 6 feet wide and has arching stems adorned with sharp small the large thorns. It can form thickets if allowed, and will take over areas if left unchecked. It thrives in moist to wet soils and can be found in open woodlands, meadows, and along waterways. It can tolerate flooding as well as the dry summer months without supplemental watering (once established), and will thrive in acidic to neutral soils with pH values from 5.6 to 7.0
In early spring Nootka rose starts to emerge from its dormant state. New shoots and leaves begin to grow, and by late spring, usually in May, it produces its beautiful and fragrant pink flowers, attracting pollinators like butterflies and bees.
The flowers give way to the development of small, round, and reddish-orange fruits called rose hips as summer progresses. The rose hips begin to ripen and mature, becoming an essential food source for various birds and mammals in the ecosystem. Many rose hips will persist on the plant through winter.
Plant Nootka Rose in areas that it can be easily contained, as it will spread to fill any space when allowed to. Nootka Rose spreads by suckering roots, as far as space and moisture permit, to form broad thickets. Regular pruning may be necessary, and should be done in the winter months after hip production has concluded.
Plant in full sun if you want to promote flowering, as Nootka Rose may not bloom if planted in full shade. To produce fully fragrant blossoms, ensure it has at least 6 hours of sunlight per day.
It prefers acidic soil that is rich and well-drained, and will only tolerate moderate lengths of flooding. Ensure the planting site will have plenty of airflow, as molds and bacteria can grow inside the dense foliage if little to no airflow is provided.
