Oregon Crabapple is a deciduous tree native to the western coastal regions of North America, namely Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia. It is a small to medium-sized tree that typically reaches a height between 16 and 40 feet with an irregular, rounded crown. While the apples are sour to eat fresh, they make wonderful jellies and pies. It thrives in moist areas like stream banks and wet forests.
In the early spring, the tree produces clusters of fragrant,
white to pale pink flowers.
During the summer months, it is in full leaf, displaying a canopy of lush, dark green foliage. At this time, fruit starts to form, initially green in color and slowly growing larger and turning yellow to reddish purple when ripe.
The fall brings a vibrant splash of color to the foliage with golds, oranges, and some reds showing against the colors of remaining yellow/red apples.
Oregon Crabapple thrives best in full sun, although it can tolerate partial shade with a slight compromise in fruit size and production. Providing protection from the cold during its first one or two winters is recommended to ensure a strong start.
It thrives in moist to wet conditions, and its adaptability to handle wet winter soil and heavy clay makes it a hardy choice for PNW gardens. It is relatively easy to grow and flourishes in most fertile soils, especially those that retain moisture well and have good drainage, such as loamy soil. It is often found along the edges of wetlands and in moist woods, making it an excellent addition for beautifying wetter areas in any garden.
During dry summer months, providing just the right amount of water will support the growth of larger fruits for fall. However, caution should be taken during harvest time, as excessive watering might cause fruit splitting. Similarly, cutting off water a few days before harvest will make for sweeter fruit, as the tree will use water stored in its fruit to help sustain itself through drought.
