Pacific Madrone is an evergreen tree native to the western coast of North America. It easily stands out in many landscapes with its twisted and contorted trunks. The smooth, reddish-brown to orange-brown bark peels off in thin sheets, revealing a lighter, almost white layer underneath. Pacific Madrone is susceptible to leaf blights and root rot if overwatered or planted in shade. They thrive in relatively poor soil conditions and standard garden irrigation will most likely overwater them. Once the tree is established, it will flourish with a bit of neglect in a dry area of the garden or landscape. No matter the location, deep, well drained soil is imperative.
In spring, Pacific Madrone displays creamy white, waxy, urn-shaped blossoms that serve as a nectar source for hummingbirds and native pollinators.
As the seasons progress, clusters of small round fruits develop, gradually turning bright red in autumn, providing a vital food source for various bird and mammal species.
The tree's shiny, leathery leaves remain on its branches for around two years, transitioning from vivid green to burnt orange before eventually falling to the ground.
Start with a small plant. Smaller madrones tend to establish themselves more quickly in new sites. A potted Madrone is much more likely to root well than one that is dug up and transplanted.
They absolutely require well-draining soil to thrive. Make sure the planting location has good drainage to prevent issues related to root rot and fungal diseases. Only water in new plantings once, and wait a few days before giving them a second drink. Make sure to deep-water, as shallow frequent watering will promote fungal diseases that can lead to root rot and cankers.
Similar to well draining soil, plant Pacific Madrone in areas with plenty of airflow to prevent leaf blight. They are found most often on the edges of bluffs or in areas where there is not much competition from taller trees.
