Redtwig Dogwood • Cornus sericea

Growth Habit and Planting Environment

Redtwig Dogwood is known for its eye-catching bright red or purplish-red stems which provide a stunning display, especially during the winter months. It typically grows between 6 and 9 feet tall, and 8 to 12 feet wide. It thrives in wetland habitats but can tolerate a range of soil conditions. Its relatively easy to grow and maintain, with regular pruning recommended to rejuvenate the vibrant stem color.

Seasonal Cycle

As the temperatures start to warm up in early Spring, new leaves begin to emerge and the shrub starts to produce small clusters of creamy-white flowers, which reach full maturity around late

spring to early summer in Western Oregon.

Fall brings a beautiful display of red, purple, and sometimes yellow leaves, which fall off and reveal the shrub's most prominent feature - dark to light red, and sometimes purple, stems that add visual interest and color to gardens in the winter

Planting Tips

When planting Redtwig Dogwood, you will need to keep in mind that it needs plenty of space to spread out, and will do so to an almost unlimited capacity if left unchecked. Lower branches will extend from the base of the plant and lay on the ground, eventually rooting and expanding its footprint.

It prefers moderate to mild acidic soils with a range between 5.5 and 6.5 with moderate to poor draining soil conditions. Remember, though, that it will not tolerate long periods of flooding and the soil cannot be allowed to dry out.
