Saskatoon berry • Amelanchier alnifolia

Growth Habit and Planting Environment

Saskatoon Berry typically grow to heights ranging from 3 to 16 feet tall and 15 feet wide, although some impressive specimens can even reach over 30 feet. One notable example is the National Champion Amelanchier alnifolia, recorded in 2016, which stands at an impressive height of 44 feet, located in Clackamas, Oregon. During the spring season, these shrubs produce beautiful clusters of white or pinkish flowers. The fruits of Amelanchier alnifolia are gaining popularity as an emerging horticultural crop across the upper mid-western regions and Canadian prairies. Saskatoon Berry has a tendency to sucker, giving rise to colonies of interconnected individuals.

Seasonal Cycle

In mid-spring, Saskatoon Berry bursts into life with compact clusters of fragrant, white flowers that emerge just before the leaves. As the season progresses, the flowers work their magic, transforming into edible reddish berries that later mature into sweet, blue-colored berries over the course of the summer. If keeping Saskatoon Berry for fruit production, it is wise to cover the bushes with bird and deer netting, as these berries are native food sources to wildlife of all kinds.

Saskatoon Berry's transformation continues as the fall arrives and its foliage takes on captivating shades of orange and red. It is sure to add some welcome fall color to any garden or landscape.

Planting Tips

Saskatoon Berry prefers moist, well-drained, and acidic soils for optimal growth, with full sun exposure enhancing both berry production and vibrant fall colors. Once established, this plant demonstrates resilience, tolerating harsh, dry, and even alkaline conditions. Soil pH conditions between 5.0 and 7.0 are ideal. When planted in soils with a higher pH, expect smaller size and a much lower yield.

For optimal establishment, it is recommended to plant Saskatoon Berry in the spring. If growing multiple plants, spacing them at least 6-8 feet apart ensures adequate air circulation during establishment to reduce the risk of disease. When the plant is young, it is advisable to prune weak or diseased branches and stems, especially those that sucker off of the main plant.
